New Delhi: The government has taken a big decision to stop cyber fraud. Now the rules have been changed to curb fraud using fake foreign numbers. The government has said that all messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal will now be able to run only when an active Indian SIM is installed in the phone. It will no longer be possible to run the app only through Wi-Fi.
Has it been made mandatory to link all apps to SIM?
The central government has ordered all messaging app companies to compulsorily link their platforms to the active SIM card installed in the phone. For this, companies will have to submit their compliance report to the Department of Telecommunications, i.e., DoT, within 120 days. It will have to be clearly written in the report whether they have implemented the new rule or not. If the report is not submitted on time, the government can take strict action.
Why is it necessary to have a SIM in the phone?
DoT said that many apps identify users by mobile number but do not consider it necessary to have a SIM card in the phone. People can also use them through Wi-Fi. Foreign cyber thugs were taking advantage of this flaw. They were cheating people through fake foreign numbers. To eliminate this risk, this rule has now been implemented.
Will action be taken against breaking the new rules?
If apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Snapchat, ShareChat, Josh, and JioChat do not follow this rule, then action will be taken against them under the Telecommunication Act 2023 and cybersecurity rules. The government says that it is necessary to keep the entire telecom system secure, and this time no relaxation will be given.
Will the apps running on the computer also be affected?
Services running on computers and laptops have also been included in the new order of the government. Now WhatsApp Web or Telegram Web will automatically log out every 6 hours. To log in again, the user will have to scan the QR code. Its purpose is that even if a fraudster steals the web session, he cannot misuse it for a long time.
Have these rules come into effect yet?
The government has implemented these rules, and all apps will have to follow the instructions. These changes will be applicable across India. Now only those messaging apps whose service is linked with the active SIM of that number will be able to run. The Department of Telecommunications has clearly said that unless it itself changes the rules, these orders will remain in place.
Why was the step taken?
This step of the government is a big change in the direction of stopping cyber fraud. Now to run any messaging app, an active SIM will be required in the phone, and without a SIM, it will not be possible to even open the app. This rule will further strengthen the security of users in the coming times.
